Sneaking and Running

Max and Jacob woke up on the shores next to the harbour to the sound of an explosion. Jacob quickly got up to survey the situation he was in. He was surprised, but fortunate to find Max waking up next to him.

“Max, are you all right?”

“I-I think so…a little numb, and the sound of fireworks in my ears.”

“I think that’s gunfire! This city is under siege!”

“Where’re the others,” the fox looked around.

“They must be at Shire. It’s not safe here—we need to get outta here!”

“Agreed, I don’t think anyone knows we’re here. Let’s sneak carefully.”

The gunfire was close, but not near the fox duo. The two got onto the deserted harbour to sneak against the walls of the port office where there was cover. Max peered out to the street. There were silhouettes of creatures running about in the distance, but none were facing them. He motioned Jacob to cross the street to the house, and repeat the process.

Max and Jacob came across another street—this time, he saw soldier behind the window of a second story building, “There’s a guard on the second floor on that building,” Max pointed as he whispered, “Once he turns around, we’ll sprint across to that building straight ahead.”

“Okay, got it,” said the scared fox.

Max forgot to take account of another group of hyena soldiers resting a few building down to the left of the fox’s position. Unfortunately, they were spotted.

“They saw us!” Jacob cried.

“Run!”

The two ran as fast as their foot paws could carry them. They zigzaged their way across the city trying to lose the pursuers. The fox duo ran into a group of civet militia, “Stop right tere!”

Max and Jacob raised their paws above their heads to show submission. Max opened his mouth, but no words came out has he was too scared that the civet hoard would shoot at them.

“Don’t shoot us!” Jacob cried.

“Uat are you two doing here?” the civet commander questioned.

“We’re refugees, we’re washed ashore trying to escape—”

A single shot was fired, and the civet sniper at the rear dropped dead.

“Hyenas! Tree-o’clock!” one civet shouted.

The two foxes made a getaway after that. They soon after made it to the city’s outskirts where Jacob looked behind, “I *pant* think *pant* we’ve lost *pant* them.”

The Max slowed to a comfortable pace, “Good,” he panted, “It’s getting too dark to see anything. Let’s set up camp on the outskirts of the jungle over yonder. We’ll get to Shire tomorrow.”

“Maybe, they’ll find us, I hope…”

Rodney and Thomas freed themselves from bondage. Rodney pointed out the basement window, “We’ll use that window to escape.”

“What about our gear?”

“There’s nothing we could do about it right now, let’s focus on getting outta here.”

Rod checked the window to unlock the window by switching the pad on it while Thomas brought the chairs over, “You’ll need this.”

“Uh, thanks.”

Both foxes had gotten out—it was the middle of the night. The moon shined as it waned—providing a bit of light. Rodney sneaked carefully away from the abandoned warehouse, before walking at a steady pace. He noticed that Thomas was following, “Why’re you following me?” he said in a normal voice.

“I thought we’re going to the police station.”

“It’s the middle of the night! We should go home to catch up on some sleep. A lack of sleep is unhealthy doncha know.”

“By the time you get there, it’ll be morning—might as well get to the station.”

“You go if you want to. I’M going home.”

“No, we have to stay together!”

“Keep your voice down! You wanna wake everyone up?”

“You were the one who’s making a commotion!”

There were distant noises coming from the warehouse, “See what you’ve done? Let’s get outta here while the getting’s good.”

Both foxes quickened their pace. They cut corners in alleys to put a larger distance. It worked, but Rod was getting annoyed when Thomas continued to follow him, “Quit following me! They won’t catch us if we split up!”

“We’re strong if we st—”

“They’re over here!” someone shouted.

At an instant, both foxes split up as they ran away. They hid in the alleyways as they heard a van coming from behind. The van came to a halt, and Ethan’s cronies poured out of the vehicle.

“They can’t be too far out, spread out and search for ‘em!” the fox thug said.

Thomas was not the most physical of beast, and knows he can’t outrun them. What he lacks in strength, he made up in intelligentsia. He climbed up the ladder to the outside stairs. The metal stairs clanged with every foot paw even though the fox tried to be quiet. This alerted the residents of the apartment as they turned on their lights—giving away his position.

“He’s over there!” Tom could hear shouting.

He ran across the veranda to the end. The next apartment across was very close, but the fox was not confident to climb the rail, and jump over a gap to the next terrace. He instead hopped onto the railing of the staircase and slide down before jumping off at a comfortable height. Tom continued to escape on paw under the veranda in hopes to block the view of the persuaders that were searching floors above where he was at.

After zigzagging around, he was very tired. He did not see nor hear his captures, so he was confident he had lost them. The fox decided to return home to sleep instead of reporting to the station since it was closer.

Rodney was not as physical like Thomas. But, he was not as brainy as him either. He made that up by being more agile. He chucks rocks he finds on the ground close to his trackers in hopes to distract them as he escapes. He sneaked across hedges adjacent to the apartment complex into a park.

Rod moved along the edge of the hedges so will not be caught in the open. At the end, he was about to cross the street when he heard a van approaching. He wanted to dashed to the alley between the two stores, but fear of getting caught held him to stay hidden in the hedges. The van slowed as it drove across the field—surveying the area. The van circle around two more time—by then, the fox grew impatient. He wanted to throw a twig, a rock or anything to lure the van away, but afraid that moving would create movement of the branches—revealing his position.

Soon after, the vehicle drove away, and Rodney made a run for it. He had lose his captures, and reward himself by heading home to get some sleep before morning rolls around.
Max and Jacob found themselves washed up on Bay City. Meanwhile, Rodney and Thomas escaped from Ethan.

Enjoy!
